Question:
The first message in this episode is from a listener named Sarah Salah al-Din from Egypt. Our sister asks and says: What is the time period in which we can perform the Dhuha prayer?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The time in which the Dhuha prayer is prescribed is from when the sun has risen the height of a spear until it stands in the middle of the sky. This is the time for the Dhuha prayer. It is better to pray it when the heat of the Dhuha becomes intense, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 748a If one prays it early after the sun has risen, he has caught the Dhuha prayer, and he may pray it at any part of the Dhuha time, until the sun stands, which is about half an hour or close to that before the zenith. This is the time when the sun stands in the eye of the observer, and that is when it is in the middle of the sky, before it leans toward the west. This is called the time of standing. It is not permissible for a Muslim to perform voluntary prayer in this time, except for prayers with specific causes.
As for prayers with specific causes, such as the eclipse prayer, the greeting of the mosque, and the prayer of Tawaf in Makkah, these and their like are prayers with specific causes. The correct view is that there is no harm in performing them in the time of prohibition. This is the most correct of the scholars' opinions. So if one performs Tawaf around the Sacred Ka'bah after Asr, or after Fajr before the sun rises, there is no harm in praying two rak'ahs. Likewise, if the sun is eclipsed in the afternoon, the eclipse prayer is prescribed for Muslims according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. Likewise, if one enters the mosque after Fajr or after Asr to sit in it for seeking knowledge or otherwise, the Sunnah is to pray two rak'ahs before sitting, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 1167, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not exclude one time over another. This is the stronger opinion. And Allah is the guarantor of success.
