Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In his second question, he says: Your Eminence! What is the meaning of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) statement regarding the Ummah, where he says in a hadith:
all of which will be in Hell apart from oneكلهم في النار إلا واحدة
Sunan Ibn Majah 3993Sahih (Darussalam)
And who is the one group? Are the seventy-two groups all eternally in the Fire? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Jews split into seventy-one sectsافترقت اليهود على إحدى وسبعين فرقة
Sunan Ibn Majah 3992Hasan (Darussalam)
meaning: all of them are perishing except one,
The Christians split into seventy-two sectsوافترقت النصارى على ثنتين وسبعين فرقة
Sunan Ibn Majah 3992Hasan (Darussalam)
meaning: all of them are perishing except one,
And this Ummah will split into seventy-three groups, all of them in the Fire except oneوستفترق هذه الأمة على ثلاث وسبعين كلها في النار إلا واحدة
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:144
so the one group is the people of the Sunnah and the community, they are the Companions and those who follow them with excellence, the people of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and faith, and the seventy-two are threatened with the Fire. Among them is the disbeliever, among them is the sinner, and among them is the innovator. So whoever dies among them upon disbelief, he has the Fire and is eternal in it. And whoever dies upon an innovation short of disbelief, or upon a sin short of disbelief; then he is under the will of Allah, and he is threatened with the Fire.
And by this it is known that they are not all disbelievers, but rather among them is the disbeliever and among them are others from the sinners and innovators. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
