Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener Ibrahim Ahmad Ahmad sent a message saying: What is the degree of authenticity of the hadith that says:
Whoever learns knowledge for which the Face of Allah is sought to obtain thereby a worldly benefit will not find the scent of Paradise.من تعلم علمًا مما يبتغى به وجه الله ليصيب به عرضًا من الدنيا لم يجد ريح الجنة
or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said? Since I have learned knowledge and am now working as a result of learning that knowledge, but I am anxious, I hope for your guidance?

Answer:
This hadith mentioned by the questioner is an authentic hadith narrated by Abu Dawud with a sound chain from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
If anyone acquires knowledge of things by which God’s good pleasure is sought, but acquires it only to get some worldly advantage, he will not experience the ‘arf , i.e. the odour, of paradiseمن تعلم علمًا مما يبتغى به وجه الله لا يتعلمه إلا ليصيب به عرضًا من الدنيا لم يجد عرف الجنة
Mishkat al-Masabih 227
And 'urf: the wind, and this is a severe warning. This hadith is among the hadiths of warning that the Salaf take at their apparent meaning; because that is greater in deterrence, and its ruling is the ruling of all other people of sins.
But if he repents to Allah from that, then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) accepts his repentance. Every sin, whenever its owner repents from it, even if it were from major shirk, if its owner repents with a sincere repentance, a repentance of return, Allah accepts his repentance. Allah says :
O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًا
[Al-Tahrim: 8], and He says (Glorified and Exalted is He):
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[Al-Nur: 31], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له
Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam)
.
So the one who learned knowledge for which the Face of Allah is sought for the sake of a job, or for other purposes; then he must repent to Allah from that, and Allah will erase from him what occurred of the defective intention, and He is the One of immense grace , and what he obtained from the effects of the job after that does not harm him. What he obtained of livelihoods or salaries and other things as a result of the certificate he obtained with this knowledge is lawful for him, and he must repent to Allah from what occurred of the defective intention, and success is from Allah.
