Question:
Whoever seeks knowledge to contend with the scholars, or to use it to argue with the fools, and to have people's faces turn towards him, then he shall be admitted to the Fire.من تعلم العلم ليجاري به العلماء، ويماري به السفهاء، ويصرف به وجوه الناس إليه، أدخله الله النار
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2654Da'if (Darussalam)
I hope you will explain this hadith briefly?

Answer:
This is a hadith with a weak chain of narration, but its meaning is correct. Whoever learns knowledge for the sake of boasting—boasting over the scholars—or to compete with the foolish, or so that people will praise him and say, “He is such-and-such” and “He is such-and-such,” is a hypocrite who did not intend the Face of Allah. He will be among the hypocrites, threatened with the Fire—may Allah protect us from it. That is why it says:
the Fireفالنار
the Fire—we ask Allah for safety from it. So its meaning is correct, and its meaning is to beware of showing off in worship. It is obligatory to learn knowledge, not to boast over the scholars, not to compete with the foolish, and not to draw people’s attention to oneself, nor for their praise and commendation. No, but one must learn it so that he knows his religion through it, worships Allah through it, teaches it to people, and calls to the Shari'ah of Allah and its rulings. This is how learning must be done.
As for learning for the sake of showing off, seeking fame, boasting, competing with the foolish, or for the sake of the perishable things of this world, this is the showing off that Allah has forbidden and for which He has threatened with the Fire.
