The Ruling on One Who Abandons Prayer Out of Laziness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner asks: Is the one who abandons prayer the one who only prays on Friday? Or is it the one who prays some of the time, but does not deny the obligation of prayer, yet abandons it out of laziness?

Answer:
The correct view is that he commits disbelief by doing so. As for one who denies its obligation, he is a disbeliever according to all scholars. As for one who abandons it out of laziness, whether on Friday or in other obligatory prayers, he commits major shirk (associating partners with Allah) according to the correct of the two opinions of the scholars. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
, and because it is the pillar of Islam; it is the greatest of the obligatory acts after the two testimonies. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The head of the matter is Islam, and its pillar is the Salatرأس الأمر الإسلام، وعموده الصلاة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2616Hasan (Darussalam)
We ask Allah for safety and well-being.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah preserve you and bless you, O Shaykh.
