The validity of praying 'Asr behind someone who is making up Zuhr

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener named Faruq Hussein Ibrahim from Sudan says: I entered the mosque to perform the 'Asr prayer, and I found three people praying. So I prayed with them intending the 'Asr prayer. But after we separated and finished our prayer, they informed me that they had prayed Zuhr, because it had been missed for them. And when they stood up for the 'Asr prayer, I stood up and prayed with them as well. So, is my first prayer the valid one, or the second?
May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The first one is valid, and the second one is a voluntary prayer. Praise be to Allah, the first one is valid as long as it was within its time. Praise be to Allah, it is permissible for a person to pray 'Asr behind someone who is praying Zuhr, if he owes 'Asr, and they are praying Zuhr during the time of 'Asr; because it was missed for them, or because they combined it with 'Asr by delaying it. So his prayer with them, intending 'Asr—if he has already prayed Zuhr—is valid. This is the correct opinion among the scholars' statements. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
