Ruling on the charity of one whose wealth is from what is forbidden?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A wealthy man trades in things that are forbidden by the Shari'ah, and all his wealth is derived from this forbidden source. The question is: Is it possible for this man to participate in acts of righteousness, such as donating to the Afghans and others? Also, as Your Eminence wishes, please clarify to us, with some detail, the ruling on sponsoring an orphan, and is the Orphan Sponsorship Program affiliated with the World Islamic League—the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Foundation—trustworthy or not? Please answer us, may Allah reward you.
Answer:
As for one who has wealth that reached him by a means other than the Shari'ah, and he spends it in the causes of righteousness, we hope that he will be absolved from it, provided he repents. If he repents to Allah, feels remorse, and spends it in the causes of righteousness—such as for the poor and the needy, for public interests, for paying off debts, for marrying those in need of marriage, and the like—we hope for him absolution and well-being, and that he will be rewarded for his good intention and his sincere repentance.
This is what is required of one who is afflicted with these matters: that he should spend it in the causes of good and acts of righteousness, so that he may be absolved from its burden and safe from its consequences, along with sincere repentance and remorse.
As for the Orphan Sponsorship Fund with the League, the League is, without doubt, trustworthy in this and similar matters. By the praise of Allah, it has a great activity in the interests of the Muslims, and this is among the interests of the Muslims, especially the orphans of the Afghan mujahideen. So whoever helps in this and sponsors an orphan or more is upon great good, and he has a great reward. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 5150Sahih (Al-Albani) and he interlaced his fingers: the middle finger and the index finger.
