What is prescribed regarding the distribution of the 'Id sacrifice?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence, the Shaykh, for years we have distributed the 'Id sacrifice in three parts: we give one part to the poor and the needy, and we cook the other two parts at home and gather with our relatives to eat it. Is there anything required of us in this? We ask for clarification. May Allah reward you with the best reward for us and for the Muslims.

Answer:
Allah prescribed the 'Id sacrifice for His servants (Glorified and Exalted is He) , and He made it a means of drawing near to Him on the Day of Sacrifice, in the cities and the countryside. He did not specify how much the owner should take from it or how much he should give to the poor. So He said (peace and blessings be upon him) :
So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْبَائِسَ الْفَقِيرَ
[Al-Hajj: 28], and the other verse:
then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggarفَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْقَانِعَ وَالْمُعْتَرَّ
[Al-Hajj: 36].
So what is prescribed for the believer with his sacrifice is that he eats from it and feeds others. If he gives away one-third and distributes it to the poor, and eats the two-thirds with his family, there is nothing wrong with that and no blame on him. Even if he gives away less than one-third, that is sufficient. And if he gives to the poor from among his neighbors and relatives, there is nothing wrong with that. The matter is broad in this regard, and praise be to Allah.
