The Ruling on Employees Who Do Not Perform Their Duties

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence, some employees and workers do not give their work the necessary enthusiasm. You find that some of them, if a year or more passes and they are not ordered to do a task, they cannot do it on their own initiative, even though they know it is their duty. You also find some who delay and say, "I am authorized by my boss, and I have nothing to answer for." So, for the one whose situation is like this, is there anything required of him in his religion as long as he remains in this state? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you.

Answer:
First: It is incumbent upon every believer, male and female, to convey what they have heard of good from Allah, as the brother indicated in that regard; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
May Allah beautify a man who hears a saying of mine, so he understands it, remembers it, and conveys itنضَّر الله امرأً سمع مقالتي فوعاها، ثم أدَّاها كما سمعها
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2658Sahih (Darussalam)
, and he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)
, and when he addressed the people and reminded them, he would say:
So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience, who will convey it to him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1741
.
So I advise you all to convey what you have heard of good with insight and precision. Whoever has grasped and memorized good should convey to his family, his brothers, and his companions what he sees of that good which benefits them, while taking care to be precise about it, and not speaking of anything he has not memorized. Rather, he should convey what he has heard and memorized, and not convey anything he has not memorized, so that in this he becomes one of those who advise one another in truth, among the callers to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
As for the employees who do not perform their duties: you have heard that faith includes trustworthiness:
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due
[al-Nisa:58], so trustworthiness is among the greatest characteristics of faith, and betrayal is among the greatest characteristics of hypocrisy. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said in describing the believers:
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
[al-Mu'minun:8], and He said, Exalted is He:
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
[al-Anfal:27].
So it is obligatory for the employee to perform the trust with truthfulness, sincerity, care, and preservation of time, so that he may clear his conscience, please his Lord, and give sincere advice to his state and government in this matter, or to the company he is in, or to the one who employed him. This is what is obligatory for the employee: to fear Allah, and to perform the trust with the utmost precision and the utmost sincerity, hoping for the reward of Allah and fearing His punishment, and acting in accordance with the saying of the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due
[al-Nisa: 58].
And among the characteristics of the people of hypocrisy is betrayal in trusts. He said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Three are the signs of a hypocrite: when he spoke he told a lie, when he made a promise he acted treacherously against it, when he was trusted he betrayed.
Sahih Muslim 59a
. So it is not permissible for the Muslim to be content with imitating the people of hypocrisy. He should preserve his trust, perform his work with the utmost care, and preserve his time, even if his boss is lax, and even if his boss does not order him. He should not weaken if his boss weakens, or if his boss betrays, or is lax. Rather, let him be better than his boss, so that he performs the work, and strives to perform the work with sincere advice and the fulfillment of the trust, so that he is better than his boss, and better in the sight of Allah than his boss, and so that he is safe from liability. For his boss on the Day of Resurrection will not benefit him nor save him from the punishment of Allah in which he betrayed.
We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.
