The Ruling on a Employee’s Negligence in Performing His Work
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some employees and workers do not give their work the necessary enthusiasm. You find some of them passing a year or more without enjoining good or forbidding evil. They are late for work and say, “I am authorized by my boss, so I have nothing to worry about.” If this is the state of such a person, does he have any religious obligation as long as he remains in this state? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A: First, it is prescribed for every Muslim man and woman to convey what they have heard of good from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), as indicated by the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2658Sahih (Darussalam), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam). And when he would address the people and remind them, he would say: Sahih al-Bukhari 1741. So I advise you all to convey what you have heard of good with insight and certainty. Everyone who hears knowledge and memorizes it should convey to his family, his sisters, and his companions what he sees to be good in it, while being careful to verify it and not speaking of anything he has not memorized; so that he may be among those who advise one another to truth and among those who call to good.
As for the employees who do not perform their duties, or do not give sincere advice in them, you have heard that among the characteristics of faith is fulfilling the trust and caring for it, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Al-Nisa: 58]. So the trust is among the greatest characteristics of faith, and betrayal is among the greatest characteristics of hypocrisy, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said in describing the believers: [Al-Mu’minun: 8], and He said: [Al-Anfal: 27].
So it is obligatory for the employee to fulfill the trust with truthfulness, sincerity, and care, and to preserve time, so that his conscience is clear, his earnings are pure, he pleases his Lord, and he gives sincere advice to his state in this matter, or to the company he is in, or to any entity he works for. This is what is obligatory for the employee: to fear Allah, to fulfill the trust with the utmost perfection and the utmost sincerity, hoping for the reward of Allah and fearing His punishment, and acting in accordance with His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): [Al-Nisa: 58].
And among the characteristics of the people of hypocrisy is betrayal of trusts, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 33, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. So it is not permissible for a Muslim to imitate the people of hypocrisy; rather, he must distance himself from their characteristics, maintain his trust, and perform his work with the utmost care and preserve his time. Even if his boss is lenient with him, or even if his boss does not order him to do so, he should not sit idle from work or be lenient in it. Rather, he should strive to be better than his boss in performing the work and giving sincere advice regarding the trust, and to be a good example for others.
A: First, it is prescribed for every Muslim man and woman to convey what they have heard of good from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), as indicated by the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
May Allah beautify a man who hears a saying of mine, so he understands it, remembers it, and conveys it
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah
So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience, who will convey it to him.
As for the employees who do not perform their duties, or do not give sincere advice in them, you have heard that among the characteristics of faith is fulfilling the trust and caring for it, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
This is what is obligatory for the employee: to fear Allah, to fulfill the trust with the utmost perfection and the utmost sincerity, hoping for the reward of Allah and fearing His punishment, and acting in accordance with His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due
And among the characteristics of the people of hypocrisy is betrayal of trusts, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The signs of a hypocrite are three: 1. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. 2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise ). 3. If you trust him, he proves to be dishonest.
