Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
There is often confusion in a person's belief regarding the verses concerning the names and attributes. What is the Muslim's obligation in his belief regarding the attributes, such as the leg and the rising above? What is the ruling on one who incites people to a false belief regarding these very attributes? And what is the duty of a young man regarding such matters? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The obligatory duty of the Muslim regarding the names and attributes is to follow the path of the righteous Salaf, the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who followed them with excellence. This means believing in everything that came in the Noble Book and the pure, authentic Sunnah concerning the names and attributes of Allah, and passing them over as they came, without asking how. That is, one believes in them, affirms them, and knows that they are the truth and that they are established for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the manner befitting Him , without distortion, denial, asking how, likening, or figurative interpretation. Rather, one affirms them as they came, as Malik, al-Awza'i, al-Thawri, and others said: "Pass them over as they came without asking how." This means passing them over with their affirmation, belief in them, and the conviction that they are the truth and befitting Allah, without likening, comparing, distortion, or denial. As He the Exalted said:
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
[al-Shura: 11], and He the Exalted said:
(1) Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, (2) Allah, the Eternal Refuge. (3) He neither begets nor is born, (4) Nor is there to Him any equivalent."
[Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4]
[al-Ikhlas], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So do not assert similarities to Allah
[al-Nahl: 74], and He the Exalted said:
Do you know of any similarity to Him?"هَلْ تَعْلَمُ لَهُ سَمِيًّا
[Maryam: 65]. Therefore, it is not permissible to interpret them figuratively or to distort them.
This includes the leg and the rising above. The rising above is established for Allah, above all creation. So is istiwaa', which is rising above the Throne, meaning: He rose above it and is exalted over it in the manner befitting Him. He is not likened to His creation in His rising above their beds or their cars. No, it is a rising above that befits Him, not resembling His creation, and none knows its modality except He .
So it is with all His attributes: such as the hand, the leg, the foot, the fingers, satisfaction, anger, love, and others. All of it is the truth, established for Allah, befitting of Allah, and He does not resemble His creation in them . They are not interpreted figuratively, nor is it asked how they are. Rather, it is obligatory to affirm them for Allah in the manner befitting Him , without distortion, without denial of the divine attributes, without likening Allah to creation, and without comparing Allah to creation.
Among the best works composed on this is "Al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah" by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, a concise, beneficial, and great book. It should be memorized by the student of knowledge. So are "Al-Nuniyyah" and "Al-Hamawiyyah," two great books in this matter. Also, the book "Al-Tawhid" by Ibn Khuzaymah, the book "Al-Sunnah" by Abdullah ibn Imam Ahmad, and others, such as the refutation of Bashir... These are very great books, but the most concise one for the student is "Al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah." It mentions the creed of the people of the Sunnah and the community in a clear manner, without difficulty and without hardship...
His saying, the Exalted:
The Day the shin will be uncovered
[Surat al-Qalam: 42]. It came in the authentic hadith that Allah will uncover His leg on the Day of Resurrection for His servants so that they will know Him by it. A leg that befits Allah, like the hand, like the foot, and like the fingers. All of them befit Allah, and He does not resemble His creation, not in the foot, not in the leg, not in the finger, not in satisfaction, not in anger, not in laughter, not in love, nor in anything else:
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
[Surat al-Shura: 11]. The matter is one. And whoever interprets them otherwise has contradicted the people of the Sunnah and has contradicted the verses and hadiths. Therefore, it is not permissible to interpret them otherwise. Rather, it is obligatory to let them pass as they came, without distortion, without denial of the divine attributes, without asking how an attribute is, without comparing Allah to creation, without addition, without subtraction, and without figurative interpretation.
