Question:
The questioner: What is the ruling on one who leaves 'Arafah before the sun sets?
Answer:
The Shaykh: He has to return and stand after the sun sets, even if only for a short time. If he does not return, he owes a sacrificial animal to be slaughtered in Makkah for the poor. This is because standing there until sunset is obligatory for one who stood during the day; he must complete it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood during the day and completed it until sunset, and he said:
The presenter: May Allah preserve you, O honorable Shaykh.
