Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to a message sent to the program from our brother listener: Muhammad Subhi Mahmoud Karim, an Egyptian teacher. We presented a large part of his questions in a previous episode, which were about the ruling on raising graves out of necessity, especially if the ground is hard and cannot be dug, or if it can be dug but collapses on the dead.
You were gracious, O Shaykh, and you explained and answered with a sufficient and adequate response in a previous episode. In this episode, our brother presents some of his other questions. In one of them, he says: Is it permissible for me to perform Hajj on behalf of my mother, who is still alive, due to her lack of financial means? However, she is able to perform the rituals. I have already performed Hajj for myself, and praise be to Allah. We ask Allah for acceptance.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon His servant and Messenger, our Prophet, our Imam, and our master Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his path and is guided by his guidance until the Day of Judgment. As for what follows:
O brother questioner: It is not permissible for you to perform Hajj on her behalf as long as she is able to perform Hajj for herself. However, you should do your utmost to have her perform Hajj from your wealth if that is feasible for you.
As for performing Hajj on her behalf, that is not allowed; because performing Hajj on behalf of a living person must be due to his inability, such as old age, or an illness that is not expected to end, as stated in the authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
As for the old man and the old woman, if they are able, no one performs Hajj on their behalf, just as no one performs Hajj on behalf of the young. Rather, if he is able to perform Hajj, praise be to Allah; otherwise, he is excused. Allah the Exalted says: [Al 'Imran: 97]. So whoever is able to provide the provisions and the mount, or the cost of a car, an airplane ticket, and the expenses, must perform Hajj; otherwise, there is no blame on him, and praise be to Allah.
It is not required of you to perform Hajj on her behalf. Rather, if you are able to have her perform Hajj from your wealth, may Allah reward you with good, and this is part of being dutiful to her. Otherwise, Hajj is not obligatory upon her unless she is able to do so with her own money. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
