The Difference Between Faith and Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener: Futuww, a friend of Egyptian nationality, sent a letter containing some questions. In one of his questions, he says: What is the difference between faith and Islam? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
When faith and Islam are mentioned together, there is a difference between them in a verse or a hadith. When one of them is mentioned alone, the other is included in it.
So in His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) :
Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam
[Al-Imran: 19], faith is included in it; because when Islam is mentioned in a general sense, it is faith in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messenger, the Last Day, and the divine decree, its good and its evil. It is also the two testimonies: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving zakah, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House. It also includes jihad, enjoining good and forbidding evil, calling to Allah, truthfulness in speech, honoring the guest, honoring the neighbor, dutifulness to parents, maintaining family ties, and other things that Allah and His Messenger have commanded. It also includes in Islam leaving what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. And it includes in Islam that you worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then He sees you.
That is to say: the rank of ihsan (excellence in worship) when mentioned in a general sense
Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam
[Al-Imran: 19]. And so His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
[Al-Ma'idah: 3], faith is included in it, and ihsan when mentioned in a general sense. And so His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from himوَمَنْ يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الإِسْلامِ دِينًا فَلَنْ يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ
[Al-Imran: 85], faith is included in it, and ihsan, and it includes everything that Allah and His Messenger have commanded, and leaving everything that Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. All of this is included in Islam when mentioned in a general sense.
And so, when faith is mentioned in a general sense, all commands are included in it, and leaving all prohibitions. When it comes in a general sense, like:
O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger
[An-Nisa: 136], and like His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He):
So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Qur'an which We have sent downفَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَالنُّورِ الَّذِي أَنزَلْنَا
[At-Taghabun: 8]. And so, verses similar to these include in that everything that Allah and His Messenger have commanded, and leaving what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. And so, the authentic hadith: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path: and modesty is a branch of faith.
Sahih Muslim 35b
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in the two Sahihs, and this is the wording of Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him). So his saying:
Iman has over seventy branches
Sahih Muslim 35a
, and in the other wording:
Sixty-odd branches
, the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving zakah, fasting Ramadan, performing Hajj to the House, jihad, enjoining good, forbidding evil, and leaving all sins are included in it. And faith in Allah, His angels, His books, His Messenger, the Last Day, and the divine decree, its good and its evil, is included in it.
It includes faith in everything that Allah and His Messenger have informed about regarding what happened in the past and what will come in the end of time.
And it includes what Allah has informed about regarding the Day of Resurrection, Paradise and Hellfire, the Reckoning and the recompense. All of this is included in His saying:
Iman has over seventy branches
Sahih Muslim 35a
.
As for when they are mentioned together, Islam is the outward deeds, and faith is the inward deeds, as in the question of Jibril to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Islam and faith. Jibril came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one day while he was sitting among his Companions in the form of an unknown man, and he asked him about Islam, faith, and ihsan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
`Islam means to bear witness that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), to establish regular prayer, to pay zakali, to fast Ramadan and to perform pilgrimage to the House (the Ka`bah), if you have the means.` He said: You have spoken the truth. He (‘Umar) said: It amazed us, how he questioned him and said that he had spoken the truth. He said: Tell me about faith (Eeman). He said: `Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in al-qadar (the divine will and decree), both good and bad.` He said: You have spoken the truth. He said: Tell me about ihsan: what is ilisan? - Yazeed said: - `It is to worship Allah as if you can see Him, for although you cannot see Ilim, He sees you.`الإسلام أن تشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمدًا رسول الله، وتقيم الصلاة، وتؤتي الزكاة، وتصوم رمضان، وتحج البيت إن استطعت إليه سبيلًا، قال: أخبرني عن الإيمان، قال: الإيمان أن تؤمن بالله، وملائكته، وكتبه، ورسوله، واليوم الآخر، وبالقدر خيره وشره، قال: أخبرني عن الإحسان، قال: أن تعبد الله كأنك تراه فإن لم تكن تراه فإنه يراك
Musnad Ahmad 367, 368Lts isnad is Sahih, Muslim (8)
.
And he was confirming everything he reported, saying: "You have spoken the truth." Jibril (peace be upon him) was confirming him. So the point is that he informed him about Islam with the outward deeds, about faith with the heart deeds, and about ihsan with a specific thing from the heart deeds, which is
To worship Allah as if you see Himأن تعبد الله كأنك تراه
Sahih al-Bukhari 50
you see Him,
and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at youفإن لم تكن تراه فإنه يراك
Sahih al-Bukhari 50
meaning: with the belief and presence of mind that He sees you and watches you (Glorified and Exalted is He) . And this is the highest rank of Islam and faith: that you worship Allah as if you see Him.
And by this, you know, and everyone who hears this word knows, the difference between faith, Islam, and ihsan when they are mentioned together.
And that when Islam is mentioned alone, the deeds of faith and ihsan are included in it, and when faith is mentioned alone, the deeds of Islam and ihsan are included in it.
As for when the three are mentioned together, Islam is the outward deeds, faith is the inward deeds of the heart, and ihsan is a specific deed from the deeds of the heart, which is
To worship Allah as if you see Himأن تعبد الله كأنك تراه
Sahih al-Bukhari 50
the hadith. May Allah guide them all. Yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
