Question:
A message was sent requesting that we present it twice on this program, and we will respond to his request, may Allah reward him and you with good. The sender, Isam Bakri Mustafa, asks: What is the meaning of disbelief in taghut? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
It means disavowing it and believing in its invalidity. Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Baqarah: 256]. The meaning of taghut is that which is worshipped other than Allah. That is, one disavows the worship of other than Allah, the worship of idols, statues, and jinn; one disavows them and believes in their invalidity, and believes that the true object of worship is Allah alone . Whoever does not believe in this is not a Muslim. One must believe that Allah is the sole one worthy of worship, and that the worship of taghut, the worship of jinn, the worship of statues, and the worship of anyone who calls to the worship of himself—all of this is invalid. One must disavow all of it. Taghut refers to anyone who is worshipped other than Allah and one is pleased with it. Likewise, statues are called taghut, and worshipped trees and stones are called taghut. As for the awliya (close friends of Allah), the prophets, and the angels, they are not taghut, meaning the taghut that calls to its worship, the taghut that calls to shirk (associating partners with Allah) and its worship. From among the shayatin (devils), whether shayatin of mankind or jinn, they are the taghut.
As for the believing awliya, they disavow them to Allah; they are not pleased to be worshipped other than Allah. So it is with the prophets, so it is with the angels, and so it is with the believing jinn; they are not pleased. So taghut is the one who calls to the worship of other than Allah, or is pleased with it, like Pharaoh and his followers.
So disavowal of that means disavowing the worship of other than Allah, and believing in its invalidity. That is, you disavow the worship of other than Allah, and you believe that it is invalid, and that true worship is for Allah alone, as He said in His great Book in Surat al-Hajj: [al-Hajj:62]. Yes.

It means disavowing it and believing in its invalidity. Allah the Exalted said:
So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold
فَمَنْ يَكْفُرْ بِالطَّاغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِنْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَىAs for the believing awliya, they disavow them to Allah; they are not pleased to be worshipped other than Allah. That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood
ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ هُوَ الْبَاطِلُThe presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
