Times When Voluntary Prayer Is Prohibited

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to a letter from one of our female listeners. The listener, our sister Huda, sent approximately thirty questions. We addressed part of her questions in a previous episode, and we hope to address some of them in this episode as well. She asks Your Eminence, the Shaykh, and says: What is the time in which voluntary prayer is prohibited?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified the times in which prayer is prohibited, and they are five, by way of explanation:
The first is from the appearance of the dawn until the rising of the sun. This is a time of prohibition in which nothing is performed except the Fajr prayer and the Sunnah of Fajr, which is two rak'ahs before it. If it was missed before it, it is prayed after it. This is the first time.
The second time is from the rising of the sun until it has risen the height of a spear. This is a restricted time in which prayer is not permissible, because it is a time of prohibition. At that time, the disbelievers prostrate to the sun; the worshippers of the sun prostrate to it when it rises.
The third time is when the sun is standing; that is, when it is stationary before the zenith in the middle of the day. It is a short time, for the sun is moving, but when it is in the middle of the sky, it is called standing. This is a short time in which no prayer is performed until it leans toward the west.
The fourth is: after the 'Asr prayer until the sun turns yellow.
The fifth is after it turns yellow until it sets. These are five times in which no prayer is performed, but the correct view is that prayers with a cause are an exception. They are prayed in these times, and they are: the prayer of Tawaf. If one performs Tawaf after 'Asr, or after the dawn, or after the Adhan of Fajr, he prays the Sunnah of Tawaf, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
You descendants of ‘Abd Manaf must not prevent anyone who goes round this House and prays at any hour of the night or day he wishes.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1045
This is an exception to the times of prohibition.
Also included in this is the greeting of the mosque. If a person enters the mosque intending to sit in it until sunset, or enters it after the dawn to sit in it until the sun rises, the Sunnah is for him to pray two rak'ahs as the greeting of the mosque, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:
If anyone of you enters a Mosque, he should not sit until he has offered a tworak` at prayer.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1167
And because he (peace and blessings be upon him), when he saw a man enter the mosque while he was delivering the sermon to the people on Friday (peace and blessings be upon him), ordered him to stand and pray two rak'ahs. If it were not emphasized, he would not have ordered him to stand and pray two rak'ahs in this situation, and he said:
If one of you comes and the Imam is delivering the sermon, let him pray two rak'ahs and let him be brief in them.
Sunan ad-Darimi 2:363
.
Also included is the prayer of the eclipse. If the sun is eclipsed after 'Asr or at the rising of the sun, the prayer of the eclipse is prescribed, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The sun and the moon are two signs against the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see the eclipse,إن الشمس والقمر آيتان من آيات الله لا ينخسفان لموت أحد من الناس ولا لحياته، فإذا رأيتم ذلك فصلوا وادعوا
Sahih al-Bukhari 1044
And in the other wording:
So hasten to prayer
This covers the times of prohibition and others. Also included is the Sunnah of Wudu. If one performs Wudu, it is prescribed for him to pray two rak'ahs, based on the authenticity of the hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding that. Among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who performed ablution like this ablution of mine and offered two raka`ahs of prayer without allowing his thoughts to be distracted, all his previous sins would be expiated.
Sahih Muslim 226b
It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
These are the prayers that have causes; there is no objection to performing them in the times of prohibition. They are an exception and are specified from the evidence of prohibition. And Allah is the One who grants success. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Your Eminence, the Shaykh! What about making up missed prayers if a person forgets a prayer?

The Shaykh: Making up missed prayers is also an exception. For example, if a person sleeps through the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers, he prays them in the time of 'Asr, even after the sun has turned yellow. Similarly, if he remembers a prayer due to him after 'Asr, he prays it after 'Asr, or if he remembers it after the dawn, he prays it after the dawn, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever sleeps through the prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it. There is no expiation for it except that.
This is also an exception to the prohibition.

The presenter: May Allah bless you.
