Question:
The worshippers among us recite this supplication after the Fajr and Maghrib prayers:Muwatta Malik 20:131 ten times, (O Allah, protect us from the Fire) seven times, (O Allah, we ask You for Paradise) eight times. Is there an authentic hadith regarding this supplication?
Answer:
As for the first one, several hadiths have been narrated regarding it, and there is no harm in it. It is the remembrance of Allah ten times after Maghrib and after FajrJami` at-Tirmidhi 3553Sahih (Darussalam), and some of them have an addition: This is not only without harm, but it is prescribed after Maghrib and Fajr.
As for the supplication seeking protection from the Fire:Sunan Abi Dawud 5079Da'if (Al-Albani) seven times, a hadith has been narrated regarding it, reported by Abu Dawud with a chain that has some weakness. If a Muslim uses it, there is no harm, if Allah wills, but it is not established as authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); rather, it has some weakness in it. However, it is among the hadiths of virtues and among the hadiths of remembrance; so if a person uses it in the sense that it is a supplication, there is no harm, if Allah wills.
As for what concerns asking for Paradise eight times, I do not know of any basis for it; nothing has reached me regarding it.
