Ruling on the Discharges That Precede Menstruation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner has a question with two parts. In the first part, she says: When the monthly period approaches, it is preceded by several days of vaginal discharges that are yellowish in color, and sometimes mixed with a little simple blood. She is confused, as she says, and does not know the ruling: should she pray during this period or leave off the prayer? Knowing that if the blood starts, she sits for six days after these discharges, and if these are counted with the period, it would reach approximately fifteen days.

Answer:
Many women ask about this, and the answer is: This may occur before the period, and it may occur after the period. If it is before it and not connected to it, it is not menstruation. If she sees the yellowish discharge and the dark discharge, and these discharges that come a day or two, three, or four days before the period, then they stop and disappear, and then the period comes; these are not to be relied upon, and she does not leave off the prayer in them. Rather, she prays and fasts, and it is permissible for her husband, and likewise if they are separate after the period—after the purity—discharges come to her (yellowish and dark discharge after the period); these are not to be relied upon, and they are not to be heeded, and she does not leave off the prayer and fasting for them, and her husband does not refrain from her because of them.
It is established in al-Bukhari from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "We did not count the dark discharge and the yellowish discharge as anything." Abu Dawud added: "after the purity," and this is an addition that clarifies the meaning. So the meaning is: The female Companions did not count the yellowish and dark discharge after the purity as anything. This covers the purity before menstruation and the purity after menstruation. So whatever is after the purity before the coming of the period, and whatever is after the period, all of it is not counted as long as it is yellowish or dark, even if a little blood is mixed with it; that is not to be considered.
However, if it is connected, starting with the yellowish discharge and then the blood comes connected to it, this is from the menstruation. And likewise after it, connected to it, this is from the period, even if it reaches fifteen days; this is from the menstruation.
