Does the woman in postpartum bleeding become ritually pure as soon as the bleeding stops?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Does the cessation of bleeding for a woman in postpartum bleeding mean that she is ritually pure, even if something else, such as water or the like, comes out of her after it stops, and she has not taken a ritual bath or prayed? Is it obligatory for her to make up the prayers she missed? And how does she make them up?

Answer:
There is no minimum limit for postpartum bleeding. So if she becomes pure on the tenth day, or the twentieth day, or the thirtieth day after giving birth, she takes a ritual bath and prays. There is no minimum limit for it according to the scholars, and hadiths have also been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he set the limit at forty days, unless she becomes pure before that.
The point is that postpartum bleeding has no limit on the side of the minimum. So if she becomes pure on the tenth day, or the fifteenth, or the twentieth, or after a month, or less, or more, she takes a ritual bath and prays and fasts and becomes lawful to her husband, even if she has not completed forty days. Purity is the criterion in this case. Even if she has white discharge, this white discharge is not considered postpartum bleeding. Postpartum bleeding is blood. So if she becomes pure but then has a flow of water, this is not considered. It is like the water that comes to a woman while she is pregnant. This water is not considered menstruation or postpartum bleeding. So likewise, after delivery, this water is not considered menstruation or postpartum bleeding.
So if the blood returns to her—she became pure for twenty days or ten days, and then blood came to her on the thirty-first day—she returns to the state of postpartum bleeding according to the correct view: she does not pray, and she does not fast after the blood returns. The ten days during which she was pure, her prayers in them are valid, and her fasting in them is valid. And if she did not pray, she must make up those prayers she left. She lists them in order, not as the common people say: the midday prayer with the midday prayer, and the afternoon prayer with the afternoon prayer. No, she lists them, even in the morning, even in the midday, even at night. She lists them all according to her ability, and there is no harm in taking a rest in between. Whenever she feels energetic, she stands up until she performs what she neglected during the days of purity.
If she completes forty days and the blood is still with her, she takes a ritual bath. The limit is forty days. The limit of postpartum bleeding, according to the correct view, is forty days. This is the truth, as in the hadith of Umm Salama. So if she reaches forty days and has not become pure, she is considered pure in ruling. She must take a ritual bath and pray and fast and become lawful to her husband in ruling. And this blood that is with her is considered blood of corruption: she prays with it, and fasts, and becomes lawful to her husband.

. This ruling is the ruling for irregular bleeding. But if it coincides with the custom—the custom of women in menstruation—she sits for the custom of menstruation. So if the time of the custom comes and this blood coincides with it, she sits considering it to be menstruation. This is the truth in this issue, and we ask Allah for success for everyone.
It is recommended for the woman and the man to ask the scholars about what is difficult for them. There is no shame in asking. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: :
But Allah is not shy of the truthوَاللَّهُ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ
[Al-Ahzab: 53], and He says, Exalted and Majestic:
Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than itإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي أَنْ يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا مَا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَا
[Al-Baqarah: 26]. And Umm Sulaym said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah is not shy of the truth. Is there a ritual bath for a woman if she has a wet dream? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Umm Salamah narrated: Umm Sulaim bint Milhan came to the Prophet and she said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Indeed Allah is not embarrassed of the truth. So is it required of a woman - meaning Ghusl - when she sees in her sleep similar to what a man sees?' He replied: 'Yes. When she finds water (wetness), then she is perform Ghusl.'" Umm Salamah said: "I said to her: 'O Umm SuIaim! You have disgraced the women!'"نعم، إذا هي رأت الماء
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 122Sahih (Darussalam)
. It is recommended for one who is ignorant of something not to remain silent, whether he is a man or a woman. He asks the scholars by telephone. Allah has made these telephones easy as a mercy from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) , or by way of the radio through the program "Nur 'ala al-Darb" (Light on the Path), which is a beneficial and great program. I advise listening to it. I advise my brothers and sisters to listen to this program, for it is a beneficial program. It is broadcast between the sunset prayer and the night prayer on "Nida' al-Islam" (Call to Islam), and it is broadcast at nine-thirty on the Quran Radio every night. This is one of the great blessings of Allah. It should be listened to and benefited from. And if something in this program is difficult for someone, he asks as well, whether he is a man or a woman. And so the way of telephones is beneficial and useful.
The point is that it is obligatory to care for knowledge and to understand the religion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religionمَن يُرد الله به خيرًا يُفقهه في الدين
Sahih Muslim 1037a
. And it is narrated from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to a group who issued rulings without knowledge:
Did they not ask when they did not know? Indeed, the cure for ignorance is askingألا سألوا إذ لم يعلموا؟! إنما شفاء العيّ السؤال
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 1:995
. And greater than this is His saying, Exalted is He:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
[Al-Anbiya: 7]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.مَن سلك طريقًا يلتمس فيه علمًا سهَّل الله له طريقًا إلى الجنة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2646Sahih (Darussalam)
. This is a great virtue. And there should be no shame in this station, nor laxity, nor laziness.
People used to go on foot, and by way of camels, and by way of other animals, seeking knowledge. And some of them would travel many days in seeking knowledge. So some of the Companions would travel long distances from Madinah to Egypt, and to the Levant, for one hadith. And now Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has made it easy for the questioner to ask while he is in America. He asks from America to Riyadh, or to Makkah, or to Egypt, or to other places by telephone in a moment, in moments. He benefits while he is in his place, and on his bed. He asks and he is able to write to the scholars by letters, and the answer comes to him. And he writes to the program "Nur 'ala al-Darb" and the answer comes to him on the radio in the air, while he is sitting in his sitting place. This is one of the great blessings of Allah.
