The Shaykh’s remarks on one of the etiquettes of gatherings, which is making room in the assembly.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : This type of Muslim is currently the subject of inquiry regarding what was initiated concerning sitting. There is a hadith narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in their "Sahihayn" from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A man does not stand up for a man from his seat, but make room and expand.
,
A man does not stand up for a man from his seat.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:273
. The intention of this hadith is not the customary standing up that is done today, because that is also another deviation from the Shari'ah, but my discussion is not about this type of deviation. My discussion now is about a man sitting in a place when someone enters: he may be a worker, he may be a righteous person, he may be a just ruler who deserves all honor and respect, but not all honor and respect is prescribed to be implemented in Islam; rather, it is what is permissible honor in Islam. This is what is recommended for every Muslim to honor others with, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith known to all present, if Allah wills, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam)
. These are Islamic etiquettes that must first be known, then implemented and acted upon, because the foundation of every action is knowledge
So know that there is no deity except Allah
. Therefore, the one who does not know that there is no deity but Allah will fall into shirk (associating partners with Allah) whether he wills it or not. Therefore, knowledge precedes action. Among the etiquettes of gatherings is what came in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar mentioned earlier:
A man does not stand up for a man from his seat.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:273
. So the one who entered! He deserves honor. How is he honored? Does the one sitting stand up for him out of respect? The answer is: No. But I do not want to delve into this specific detail of the issue either. However, does one stand up from his seat to empty this assembly for that learned, virtuous, righteous man? The answer is also: No, because of this hadith. This 'Umar hadith is the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both):
A man does not stand up for a man from his seat.
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 18:273
. So what do we do?
Expand.
,
Make room and expand.
. And this is stated in the Noble Qur'an:
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you.
[Al-Mujadila 58:11]
. Therefore, the narrator of this hadith, 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, when a man stood up for him: he did not sit. He stood up, as they say, from a constraint of his own self; it was not that he was ordered to stand, or that one of the seated people said, "Stand up for the Shaykh and sit in your place"? No. If he stood up from a constraint of his own conscience, out of respect for this one who entered, Ibn 'Umar would not sit in that assembly. Why? Because he was the one who heard the Messenger (peace be upon him) say:
A man does not stand up for a man from his seat, but make room and expand.
. Therefore, the Muslim is the one who looks at the consequences of matters. "Whoever does not look at the consequences, the world is not his companion." If he sees that there is a person who should be honored by seating him in the place befitting him, implementing a hadith that is also famous on the tongues of people, and indeed narrated in the introduction of the Sahih of Imam Muslim from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Place people in their proper stations
. However, this hadith, from the perspective of hadith science: its chain is not established; therefore, it is said in hadith terminology: It is narrated from the Messenger of Allah that he said:
Place people in their proper stations
, because its chain is not authentic.
