Definition of Hidden Shirk

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence mentioned major shirk and minor shirk, so what is hidden shirk? Since some scholars said: "Shirk is more subtle than the crawling of a black ant on a black stone!"

Answer:
Hidden shirk is of two types: a minor type, which is riya' (showing off in worship), for its place is in the hearts. It is called hidden shirk, and it is called minor shirk.
There is another hidden type, which is the shirk of hypocrisy—may Allah protect us from it—which resides in the hearts. Thus, its people conceal their disbelief and misguidance. They lie to Allah and His Messenger, and they believe that what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought is false. This is major hypocrisy, major hidden shirk, and apostasy from Islam—may Allah protect us from it. It is the riya' of the hypocrites and the disbelief of the hypocrites; because they are with the Muslims in appearance, and with the disbelievers in reality, with their vile beliefs, their lying to Allah and His Messenger. As Allah said regarding them:
In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their diseaseفِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا
[Surat al-Baqarah: 10].
