The Ruling on a Woman Uncovering Her Face Before Her Husband’s Brothers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A woman got married, and her husband from Jizan insisted that she not cover herself in front of his brothers, or else he would divorce her. What should she do, given that she is afraid of divorce? All the people of the South do this, so we ask, with gratitude, for a message to those whom ignorance has led them to this, especially the people of Jizan and 'Asir?
Answer:
It is not permissible for a man to allow his wife to appear before men; this is not permissible for him. It is not befitting for him to be so weak and lenient with his family that they uncover themselves before his brothers, or his uncles, or his sister’s husband, or his cousins, and the like, as is done in the South and elsewhere. This is a mistake! It is not permissible, and she is not obligated to obey him in this; rather, obedience is only in what is right. She must observe the hijab and cover herself. If he divorces her, Allah will give her something better than him, if Allah wills. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Surat al-Nisa: 130].
It is narrated from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: [Surat al-Talaq: 4]. It is not permissible for the husband to threaten her with divorce if she is careful and engages in what leads to modesty, safety, and avoiding the disgrace of a man who is not jealous of his wife. And Allah is the One to be asked for help.
A concise treatise on the hijab will be published, if Allah wills, in the South and elsewhere.
