The ruling on the Friday prayer for one who is on a military mission
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A military unit moved from Riyadh to a certain location for two months. Is it permissible for them to pray the Friday prayer in the desert? And does the ruling for travelers apply to them? Knowing that there, a squad is called out from them every day to be on standby, while the rest play football and eat from the blessings of Allah?
Answer:
The traveler and those like him do not have to perform the Friday prayer; rather, they continue to pray the prayer of travelers, Zuhr and 'Asr, and they do not have to perform the Friday prayer. The one who is out in the wilderness for a need, waiting for orders, or assisting an army, or something similar, his ruling is the ruling of travelers, not the ruling of residents, until he establishes the Friday prayer. So if he stays in a piece of wilderness in the desert waiting for orders, his ruling is the ruling of travelers.
As for if he stays for two months, intending and resolving to stay for two months, the majority of the scholars hold that he completes the four rak'ahs, but he is not among the people of the Friday prayer; he completes the four rak'ahs only, Zuhr and 'Asr, and 'Isha' if he is certain to stay for more than four days.
As for a person who does not know, under the orders, whether he will stay one day or five days, and he may stay longer, and does not know when he will be ordered to leave? Then he has the shortening of prayer forever, until he intends a long stay that he knows is a stay resolved upon for more than four days; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed four days in Makkah before Hajj, and he used to pray the shortened prayer; so that indicates that a stay of four days, and what is around it, and less than it, has the ruling of travel. So if he intends more than that, the majority hold that he completes the four rak'ahs, for the original ruling is the completion of the four rak'ahs, which is left off in travel and what is attached to travel, and what remains besides that stays on the original ruling.
Question: And if they pray the Friday prayer during these two months, do they repeat it as Zuhr?
Answer: Allah knows best, I do not know, it is a matter for consideration.
