The Obligation of Correcting the Intention in Seeking Knowledge
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the ruling on one who learns in order to obtain a certificate, or to become a scholar, or for other such purposes?
Answer: If he learns for the sake of this world, to get a job, or to be called a scholar, then he is a loser; he does not benefit from the knowledge in a way that benefits him in the Hereafter. But if he learns to benefit, to know the ruling of Allah, to know what Allah has prescribed for him, and also to get a job and benefit in the affairs of his worldly life, then there is nothing wrong with it. Indeed, knowledge leads to both. However, one may learn to get a job or to be called a scholar, and then Allah guides him and he returns to the right path, just as some of the Salaf said: “We learned knowledge for other than Allah, but it refused to be for other than Allah.”
He should learn, even if his intention is bad; he should not abandon knowledge. He should learn, strive, attend with the scholars, and ask his Lord to improve his intention. He should be humble before Allah, asking Him to help him correct his intention and to intend for his knowledge the Face of Allah . Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is Generous and Bountiful; if he is sincere in his supplication, Allah will answer his call and improve his condition, so that his intention becomes good thereafter. He should not despair or abandon knowledge. Yes.
