Sincerity of intention for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in study.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : First: What brought us to the field of education, whether a school, institute, or university? What brought us? Did we come to gain a share of this world, or did we come to gain a share of religion? People differ. Some people come only for the sake of worldly matters. And some people come for the sake of religion, to learn the matters of religion so that they may establish themselves and then establish others. There is no wonder or surprise in this. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So, whoever migrated for Allah and His Apostle, then his migration will be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever migrated for worldly benefits or for marrying a woman, then his migration will be for what he migrated for. من كانت هجرته إلى الله ورسوله فهجرته إلى الله ورسوله. ومن كانت هجرته لدنيا يصيبها أو امرأة يتزوجها فهجرته إلى ما هاجر إليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 2529
. This is an example, otherwise all actions follow this pattern. Does the one who wants to learn religion to act upon it and teach people miss out on any knowledge? The answer is: No. And the one who learns for the sake of the world, if he does not miss out on any knowledge and becomes like the first one, they differ greatly in reward and recompense. Therefore, I urge my brothers, the students of knowledge, that their intention be pure for Allah. And by that I mean: students of Islamic jurisprudence, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever seeks knowledge from that by which the Face of Allah is sought, desiring a worldly display, will not smell the fragrance of Paradise. من طلب علماً مما يبتغى به وجه الله يريد عرضاً من الدنيا لم يرح رائحة الجنة
. May Allah protect us from that. And reflect on His saying:
in those things by which the pleasure of Allah is sought مما يبتغى به وجه الله
Sunan Abi Dawud 3273Hasan (Al-Albani)
because knowledge is of various types. So what are the sciences by which the Face of Allah is sought? Answer. Answer. The Islamic sciences by which the religion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) lives. As for worldly matters, such as mathematics, engineering, and the like, these are for the world in their origin and branch. So, my brother, be sincere to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in seeking knowledge. Some people say: If you say this, you are preventing us from entering the schools, institutes, and universities that follow a system. A person progresses in them until he reaches the goal, because many people want to study to obtain a degree. So what is the solution? Do we leave these schools and say: "You must study in the mosques and in the homes"? Leave them. As for these schools, institutes, and universities, do we leave them, or do we correct our intention and study in these universities? Which is better, brothers? The second: that we correct our intention. And how do we correct the intention? Listen. It is known at the present time that a person cannot rise to a position where he benefits people unless he has with him? Brother. Yes, you, stand up. A person cannot rise to a rank where he benefits people unless he has with him? A degree. So if he says: "I do not have a degree," they kick him out. So if you seek knowledge in these schools, institutes, and universities in order to obtain the degree by which you rise to a position where you benefit people, is this intention a correct intention for which the servant is rewarded, or a defective intention? The answer is: The first, without doubt. The first. So, my brother: enter the schools, enter the institutes, enter the universities with the intention that you want a degree by which you are able to benefit people, to be a manager, to be a minister, to be a teacher, because there is no rank—there is no rank like this—unless one has the degree with him.
