The ruling on believing those who claim to see the blessed and the tormented among the dead in dreams
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The following message is from Makkah al-Mukarramah, sent by our brother Muhammad 'Abd al-Hamid Muhammad Hatim from the district of Ibb. Our brother says: There is a woman in our village who claims that her soul roams in the graveyards on the night of every Thursday and Friday while she is sleeping. She says that she looks at the dead Muslims, and: [Surat al-Tur:21] And yet she looks at the man or woman who used to live on the surface of the earth and have passed to the world of the hereafter. If the man was in this world one who cut off prayer or ate people's wealth unjustly, then this woman sees him being tormented in the hereafter. As for the righteous man in this world, she says that he is in the hereafter with the righteous. It is known that this woman claims and says that she is entrusted with a trust from the dead to their families in this world, to pay off their debts or thefts, for they are tormented in their graves because of them. And indeed, the family of the deceased pays off the debts of their dead. And the second time, this woman comes and the torment has been lightened for them, as she claims. My question: Please give us your opinion on this woman and other women who claim such things. Is what I mentioned in my question true, or is it lies and superstitions? May Allah reward you with good?
Answer: This and its like are not to be relied upon, it is not permissible to believe them, and they are not to be considered in any way. For she may see some of a vision and it may be true in some of her visions, and she may see a vision that is not true, and she may lie in her vision, and Satan may imagine to her things that have no truth and no existence.
So the result is that these visions which are claimed, claimed by some people, or claimed by some women, all of that is not permissible to rely upon, neither in paying off debts nor in thefts nor in anything else. But if it is a righteous woman who may see righteous visions and they are true, then it is like what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reported:Sahih al-Bukhari 6989 And he said (peace and blessings be upon him): And the righteous vision from a righteous man has a status and has value. But it is not relied upon in legislating matters, in making matters obligatory, or in forbidding matters, or in obliging the family of the deceased to do such and such, or burdening them with such and such, or the like of that. No; because these visions may be true and may be false, and the seer may be righteous and may not be righteous, and he may be confused, and the devils may come to him and imagine to him things, which he claims he saw in sleep.
So the point is that these visions and their like are not to be relied upon, and are not to be depended upon for saying that so-and-so is being tormented, or so-and-so is being blessed, or so-and-so has a debt that is paid off for him, or so-and-so does not have a debt, or the like of that. No.
But the family of the deceased should take care of their deceased. If they know that he has something of debts, they should pay it off from his estate, or from their money if Allah helps them to do so. And this is a good deed. And if he had stolen a theft from people that they know of, they should pay it off for him from his money if he has money. And if he has no money and they pay it off for him, may Allah reward them with good.
The point is that the family of the deceased should look after their deceased. If he has debts or rights for people, they should pay them off from his estate, or pay them off from their money if he has no estate, and they should seek reward in that. Or if he has money and the heirs do not allow it, then if some of his loved ones and some of his friends pay it off for him out of caution, then this is good. But relying on these visions, they are not to be relied upon.
Every person, for what he earned, is retained.
