The ruling on giving in charity money that was stolen when the location of its owner is unknown
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Shaykh Abdul Aziz, the first message in this episode is a message that reached the program from one of the female listeners. The one in distress, (N. N.) from Jeddah, our sister says in one of her questions in this message: One day I needed some money, and I was compelled to steal, so I stole from one of the girls, and that continued with me. Now I have repented to Allah and I have wept much over what my hands committed, and I do not know what to do? And I am afraid of the punishment of Allah and His Fire, especially since I cannot return these moneys; because their owners have traveled and I do not know where they are. So should I give in charity an amount equal to those moneys, or what should I do?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
So this money that you stole from the girl, and you do not know their location now, it is obligatory upon you to give it in charity to the poor and the needy, or in charitable projects, with the intention on behalf of the owner of the money, and the conscience is cleared, if Allah wills, with sincere repentance and regret. But if you are able to deliver it to the girl, it is obligatory upon you to do so. But as long as you are not able and you do not know their location, charity is sufficient with sincere repentance. Yes.
