The ruling on reciting the Qur'an and dedicating its reward to the living or the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A sister of ours sent a message saying: Your sister in Allah (E. E. K) began her message by saying: It is my pleasure to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to those in charge of the program "Light on the Path," which has illuminated our hearts and minds with its numerous benefits and great advantages. I ask Allah the Exalted to crown your efforts with success and correctness, and to reward you for the Muslims with the best reward. I ask your permission to share a matter with you, which I hope you will present to the honorable Shaykh, Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him and bless him).
My first question: My mother is illiterate and does not know how to read or write. Is it permissible for me to recite the Qur'an during her lifetime and intend its reward for her? If it is permissible, what is the ruling on vocalizing the intention in this case? Note: My mother is alive and well, and I know that it is not permissible to recite for the deceased?
Answer: There is disagreement among the scholars regarding this issue. Some scholars said: It is permissible for a person to recite for the deceased and dedicate the reward to him, or for the living and dedicate the reward to him. However, there is no evidence for this. The more apparent view is that this is not advisable, and that it is better and more cautious that no one recite for another; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do this, nor did his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all). The basis of acts of worship is that they are based on specific texts, so nothing is done from them except what has come from the Shari'ah, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
.
So what I advise is that you do not recite anything for her, whether she is alive or dead. But since she is alive, and praise be to Allah, you teach her what is easy for her so that she benefits. You teach her some of the short surahs, you are patient in teaching her, just as you teach her al-Fatihah if she does not know it well, and you strive in that and are patient. You are doing a great good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur'an.خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه
Sunan Abi Dawud 1452Sahih (Al-Albani)
So you are doing a great good in teaching your mother, guiding her, and helping her memorize what is easy from the Book of Allah, and you will have a great reward.
As for making du'a' for her and giving charity on her behalf with money, that is a good thing that benefits her whether she is alive or dead. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
