Al-Albani’s (may Allah have mercy on him) methodology in studying and attributing hadiths
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We move on to other questions via a letter from our brother (A. J.) from the Arab Republic of Egypt. Our brother asks this question and says: Shaykh Al-Albani mentions Prophetic hadiths in some of his books and says: authentic, and attributes them to his *Sahih* series, and sometimes he says: the hadith is weak and attributes it to his *Da'if* series, without attributing the hadiths to their original sources like al-Bukhari, Muslim, the authors of the *Sunan*, the *Musnad*s, and the *Mu'jam*s. Does this align with academic integrity in overlooking the mention of the predecessors of this Ummah from among the hadith scholars who were the reason for transmitting the hadith to us, as well as overlooking their statements regarding the hadith? I ask you to guide us in this matter. May Allah reward you with good?
Answer: Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din Al-Albani is among our distinguished brothers known for uprightness, good creed and conduct, and activity in collecting hadith and distinguishing its authentic from its defective. He is to be thanked and is known to us, and he has blessed efforts and noble works in this regard. We ask Allah for more success for us and for him, along with the rectification of intention and action.
However, like other scholars of knowledge, he is not infallible. Some errors and mistakes may occur for him in authenticating and weakening, and in opinions. But he is to be thanked for his independent legal reasoning and his good intention. And if he errs, there is no objection to scholars pointing it out, writing to him, so that cooperation in righteousness and piety is achieved, in accordance with the saying of His Lord: [Al-Ma'idah: 2]. This is the affair of scholars in the past and present; they cooperate and advise one another, and they do not insult one another, nor belittle, nor criticize, nor backbite, but they advise him and help him toward good, and point out to him when he errs.
And Shaykh Al-Albani is not among those who omit attribution; rather, he attributes hadiths to their sources. He only abbreviates in some cases in some books, attributing them to *Sahih* or to *Da'if*. And you are able to refer to *Sahih* and find in it the attribution to al-Bukhari, to Muslim, to Abu Dawud, to al-Nasa'i, to al-Tirmidhi, to others, and you will find the discussion of the men and the chains of narration with authenticating and weakening, and the transmission of the scholars' statements in that. It is not as the questioner mentioned. Rather, Shaykh Al-Albani—we have read his books and looked into his method—he attributes hadiths to their sources and points out what is in them according to his independent legal reasoning. But if he abbreviates in some cases and says: I mentioned it in *Sahih*, or I mentioned it in *Da'if*, or I mentioned it in *Sahih al-Jami'*, or in *Sahih* such-and-such, or in *Da'if* such-and-such, it means that he is guiding you to refer to that so that you find what you seek of research and discussion of the chain. This is how he does it, and this is his method.
So it is obligatory for you, O questioner, to fear Allah and to be just to your brother. May Allah guide them all. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. So, does His Eminence Shaykh Abdulaziz see that Shaykh Al-Albani, if he is guided to an error that occurred in his books, will correct it?
The Shaykh: If the truth becomes apparent to him, if that becomes apparent to him, if it becomes apparent to him that the one who guided him was correct and he erred, he will correct it. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
