Using the terms khal (maternal uncle) and khala (maternal aunt) for the wife's father and mother

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the term for the wife's father and the wife's mother? Because in our time, we find some people calling the wife's father a khal (maternal uncle) and the wife's mother a khala (maternal aunt). Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: We do not know of anything in the Sunnah regarding this. People's usage varies; some call the wife's mother a khala (maternal aunt) and the wife's father a khal (maternal uncle), while others call the wife's mother an 'ammah (paternal aunt) and the husband's father an 'amm (paternal uncle). The matter is easy in this regard, as it falls under the category of custom. If one calls her "my in-law" or calls the wife's father "my in-law," it is all easy. They are called "in-laws" (as-har); relatives through marriage are called in-laws. However, in people's custom, they have specific terms for this matter; some call the wife's father an 'amm (paternal uncle) or a khal (maternal uncle), and the wife's mother an 'ammah (paternal aunt) or a khala (maternal aunt). There is no dispute in this, if Allah wills. Yes.
