Attending the Mawlid out of Necessity
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Is there a sin upon you if you listen to the mawlid while compelled or forced out of respect for your father? And if not, what should I do? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: Celebrating the mawlid is among the religious innovations (bid'ah) that people introduced in the fourth century of the Hijri calendar. Therefore, no one should imitate those who introduced innovations. This is also the case with what is mentioned about the King of Irbil, who introduced this. All of this is not befitting for people of knowledge and faith to imitate those who introduced innovations, even if the person is well-known, even if he is a great king or prince, or even if he is someone who makes people of knowledge angry. The principle that must be adhered to and followed is that whatever people dispute and whatever people introduce is to be presented to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Whatever agrees with them is accepted, and whatever contradicts them is rejected. As Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said in His great Book: in His great Book: [An-Nisa: 59].
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said: Referring to Allah is referring to the great Qur'an, and referring to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is referring to him during his lifetime and to his Sunnah after his death (peace and blessings be upon him). And in the other verse: [Ash-Shura: 10].
Therefore, it is obligatory for people of faith, in times of dispute, disagreement, and the introduction of innovations, to refer what people dispute and differ in to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet. Whatever they testify to as acceptable is accepted, and whatever they do not, it is rejected.
We have looked into and examined what has occurred among people regarding these mawlid celebrations, and we have studied the biography of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the biography of his Companions. We did not find him (peace and blessings be upon him) celebrating his birth, neither in Madinah nor in Makkah, neither before the migration nor after the migration, neither before the conquest nor after the conquest.
There is no doubt that the mawlid celebrations introduced by people involve various types of evil. Among them is what was mentioned earlier regarding calling for aid (istighathah) from the person of the mawlid and seeking his support, whether it is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or someone else. Among them is what may occur of seeking nearness to Allah through him (tawassul) or through his status and right, and this is an innovation. Among them is what some do where they stand up for him, saying, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has arrived," and they stand up. This is evil, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not attend them, nor does he come out of his grave until the Day of Resurrection (peace and blessings be upon him). As Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Al-Mu'minun: 15-16], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Musnad Ahmad 15Hasan (Darussalam)
So their saying that he attends and that they stand up for him is among the evil and the falsehood, a deception of the common people. It is obligatory for people of faith to follow his Sunnah and to magnify his command and prohibition, not to introduce mawlid celebrations. What is the benefit of mawlid celebrations that contain innovations and evil? Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) says: [Aal 'Imran: 31], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: : [Al-Hashr: 7], and He (Blessed and Exalted is He) says: [An-Nisa: 80], and He (Exalted and Majestic is He) says: [An-Nur: 56], and He (Blessed and Exalted is He) says: [Al-Ahzab: 21], the verse.
So the one who truly loves the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) follows him, and he is upright on his path in performing the commands, leaving the prohibitions, and standing by the limits. He calls to his path and his Sunnah, defends it, and warns against its contradiction. This is how the believer is, this is how the one seeking salvation is, this is how the one who magnifies the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is. He magnifies his Sunnah, calls to it, and is upright upon it in speech, action, and creed. He forbids people from contradicting it and deviating from it. This is the sincere believer, and this is the successful scholar who magnifies the Sunnah, calls to it, is upright upon it, preserves it, and represents it with his morals and actions. This is the love for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And this is the love for Allah: His oneness (tawhid), obedience to Him, fear of Him, hope in Him, longing for Him, hastening to what pleases Him, caution against what He forbids, and standing by His limits. This is how the sincere believer is in his love for Allah and His Messenger.
As for introducing innovations, it is not among the signs of faith, nor among the signs of truth, but it is from the adornment of Satan and his deception of people until they introduce what Allah has not permitted. For this reason, He (Blessed and Exalted is He) said: [Ash-Shura: 21].
And the one who loves him (peace and blessings be upon him) strives to follow his Shari'ah and his path so that people may know his Sunnah, his morals, and his actions, in schools, in mosques, in homes, in travel, in residence, in the airplane, in the car, in the train, and in every place. This is how the sincere, knowledgeable believer is: he cares for the Sunnah, teaches it to people, and acts upon it. The Muslims are in complete abundance regarding the introduction of innovations; the Muslims are in complete abundance regarding innovations. [Ash-Shura: 21], and He (Blessed and Exalted is He) says: addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). [Al-Jathiyah: 18-19]. Thus he (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded; Allah commanded His Prophet to be upright upon the Shari'ah that was clarified to him and commanded by Him. So his Ummah is the same: they must be upright upon the Shari'ah that he (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, and they must adhere to it, not adding to it and not subtracting from it. Yes.

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said: Referring to Allah is referring to the great Qur'an, and referring to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is referring to him during his lifetime and to his Sunnah after his death (peace and blessings be upon him). And in anything over which you disagree - its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah.
Therefore, it is obligatory for people of faith, in times of dispute, disagreement, and the introduction of innovations, to refer what people dispute and differ in to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet. ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَ ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ تُبْعَثُونَthe first one for whom the earth is split on the Day of Resurrection

And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from

There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern
So the one who truly loves the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) follows him, and he is upright on his path in performing the commands, leaving the prohibitions, and standing by the limits. (18) Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know. (19) Indeed, they will never avail you against Allah at all
