Ruling on one who breaks his fast while traveling and then arrives in his home country
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message received by the program from our brother Saleh Sa'd al-Awfi in Madinah al-Munawwarah, Sayyid al-Shuhada neighborhood. He says in it: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. I hope you will answer these questions:
First question: If I break my fast in Ramadan while I am traveling, and then I arrive at my place of residence after the 'Asr prayer, is it permissible for me to eat and drink at my place of residence or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: If the stay is for four days or less, you may eat and drink, because you are a traveler. However, if the place you intended to go to and reside in is your hometown, or if you reside there for a long period of more than four days and you have resolved to do so, then when you arrive there, you must abstain. Abstain until the sun sets. Likewise, if you were traveling from a distant land and arrived in your country in Ramadan, in the morning, at midday, or in the afternoon, the correct opinion among the scholars is that you must abstain; because the excuse for breaking the fast has ceased, so you must abstain until the sun sets, because you have become one of the people of fasting in this state.
As for if the town you arrived in is one where you have a need, and you stay there for a day or two and then depart from it, you are a traveler. Likewise, for three to four days. If you intend to stay for more than four days, the correct opinion held by the majority of scholars is that you must abstain from the dispensations of travel; you do not break your fast and you do not shorten your prayers. Yes.
