The ruling on lost property that is consumed before it is announced

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A message was received for the program from Makkah al-Mukarramah, the radiant one, sent by our brother Abdullah Ali al-Sa'idi. Our brother says: I found five hundred riyals on one of the roads, so I did not announce it; rather, I ate it on the same day I found it, on the pretext that I would return it to its owner if I knew who he was. Now I have not found its owner. How should I act? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: It is obligatory to announce it. If you announced it for a full year, two or three times every month: "Who has the dirhams... who has the dirhams that were lost from him in such and such, in such and such a quarter, in such and such a neighborhood," announcing it in the gatherings of people, in the places where people gather around the doors of the mosques, in the markets where there is gathering, then if a year has passed since you announced it, it is halal for you, lawful for you. And whenever its owner comes and identifies it by its specific characteristics, you give it to him. It remains with you as if it were a deposit; if he comes, you give it to him.
As for if you did not announce it, but ate it and remained silent, then it is obligatory for you to give it in charity in the causes of righteousness, with the intention that it be on behalf of its owner; because you did not fulfill the conditions for its permissibility, which is announcing it. The conditions for its permissibility are announcing it, and you did not announce it, so you must give it in charity on behalf of its owner, and its reward will reach him, by the permission of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
