Fatwa No. ( 2010 )
Q: The question concerns two lost items: one is money inside a small bag, and the other is fabrics in a sack with a woman's name on it. The first was found in al-Zulfi, and the other on the road to al-Madinah, and he seeks information regarding them .
A: al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated So you must keep them and know their descriptions completely, and you must announce each of them for a full year in public gatherings, such as after the Friday prayer and the like, in al-Zulfi , Riyadh , al-Madinah , al-Qasim , and the like. If you announce them via radio and television, that is more complete. If the owner of either one comes and identifies it, return it to him. If you have announced them and made your best effort, and a year has passed without you identifying the owner, then they are yours. If the owner comes after the year and identifies it, return it to him, or its value in the case of the fabrics. If you wish to give them in charity to their owners, and one of them comes and identifies it, inform him of the situation. If he accepts, that is fine. If he does not accept, return it to him. You will have reward from Allah for your good deed—that is good.
If you wish to give them in charity to their owners, and one of them comes and identifies it, inform him of the situation. If he accepts, that is fine. If he does not accept, return it to him. You will have reward from Allah for your good deed—that is good.

That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about such lost property, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the questioner: Know its container and its tie, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes, [return it to him]; otherwise, it is yours to do with as you wish.
If you wish to give them in charity to their owners, and one of them comes and identifies it, inform him of the situation.
