The Ruling on the Reward of the Qur'an Reaching the Dead

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Does the reward of the Qur'an reach the deceased, or does it not?

Answer:
There is scholarly disagreement on this matter. Some scholars hold that it reaches the deceased, while others state that it does not, because there is no evidence from the Sunnah. The closest and preferable position is that it is not practiced.
However, charity, supplication, performing Hajj on behalf of the deceased, performing 'Umrah on behalf of the deceased, and making up missed fasts if the deceased owed fasts, all of this benefits him and reaches him.
As for reciting the Qur'an, there is no evidence for it. Therefore, the preferable course is to leave off reciting for the deceased. Instead, one should perform charity on his behalf, supplicate for his forgiveness and mercy, perform the funeral prayer, seek forgiveness for him, and perform Hajj and 'Umrah on his behalf. All of this benefits him.
