The ruling on shaving another person's beard
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Does the barber who shaves people's beards bear sin and guilt for it? And if his source of income is shaving, what is the ruling on the money he takes? Is it forbidden?
Answer:
You have heard that shaving the beard is forbidden, and that the beard is what grows on the cheeks and the chin, what grows on the bone that runs alongside the earlobe. This is the limit of the beard: what is above it up to the head, and what is below it of the beard. So the beard is what grows on the cheeks and the chin; that is the beard. Therefore, the one who shaves this for people, or trims it for them, is sinful, and he bears his share of the burden. And what he takes is illicit money... forbidden and reprehensible. For Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says: [Al-Ma'idah: 2]. And whoever assists in a forbidden matter has participated in the forbidden matter. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who consumes riba (usury or interest), the one who gives it, the scribe, and the witnesses. He said: Why did he curse the scribe? Because he assisted in the sin. And he cursed the witnesses? Because they assisted in the sin. And he cursed the one who consumes riba as well.
So the point is: assisting in what Allah has forbidden is forbidden. And if one takes money for it, it becomes forbidden earnings, it becomes illicit. We ask Allah for safety.
And likewise the sale of tobacco, and intoxicants and their price, all of it is forbidden. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the wine, its drinker, its server, its presser, its one who is pressed for it, its carrier, the one to whom it is carried, its seller, its buyer, and the one who consumes its price. All of them are cursed. We seek refuge in Allah, we ask Allah for well-being.
And included in this is what Allah has forbidden, such as smoking, the well-known intoxicating hashish, and opium. Everything that is intoxicating falls under the prohibition. Therefore, selling it is forbidden, its price is forbidden, and cooperating in it is forbidden. Likewise, shaving the beard is forbidden, taking a fee for it is forbidden, the one who offers it has done a forbidden act, and the one who accepts it has done a forbidden act. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
