The ruling on one who accumulated wealth through an unlawful means and then repented

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A man accumulated wealth other than by the Shari'ah, then he repented. What is the ruling on the wealth he has?

Answer:
He has to repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and return the wealth to its owners if he took it other than by the Shari'ah. He should return it to its owners if he usurped it from someone or stole it from someone. If it was through a defective transaction, let him fear Allah and give in charity what exceeded the lawful portion. He should keep what he knows to be lawful, and he should dispose of what he knows to be forbidden in the causes of righteousness, such as charity for the poor, maintaining the restrooms attached to mosques, and the like. He should not eat anything he knows to be forbidden. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) accepts his repentance. That is, he should strive to keep the lawful, and whatever exceeded the lawful, which he knows to be invalid and entered his possession through a non-Shari'ah path, if its owners are known, he should return it to them. If he does not know them, or if he fears danger to himself in returning it, he should give it in charity to the causes of righteousness and good deeds.
