One who takes forbidden money and then repents from it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 16434 )
Q: There are leaders of some battalions who do not accept anyone to register with them unless he pays them a sum of money, in exchange for his military registration in the battalion, so that he may receive a salary from the government. What is the way out for one who has done this and wants to repent from it?
A: One who takes forbidden money and then repents from it must return it to its owner if possible. If not, he must give it in charity with the intention that the reward belongs to the owner, along with regret, seeking forgiveness, and the resolve not to return to such an act. This is because Allah the Exalted says:
And do not consume one another's wealth unjustlyوَلاَ تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:188]
And the employee
who takes money from those who come to him is considered one who takes the forbidden bribe. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who gives the bribe and the one who takes it. Bribery is a great crime, a major sin among the major sins, and a vile, corrupt gain that is not permissible for a Muslim to take under any circumstances. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
