The Ruling on Greeting, Embracing, and Shaking Hands on the Day of Eid

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The greeting on the day of Eid—meaning Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha—and what people do, such as shaking hands, embracing, or exchanging messages after the Eid prayers, even if they had met before the prayer: is there a basis for this? And if there is a basis for it, what is the correct manner?

Answer:
I am not aware of a basis for this, but the Salaf used to congratulate one another: “May Allah accept from you,” “May Allah accept from us and from you.” So if he meets him, shakes his hand, and says, “May Allah accept from us and from you, and may your Eid be blessed,” we do not know of any harm in that. This is from the original practice: “May Allah bless you in the Eid,” or “May Allah accept from us and from you,” and words like this. There is no harm in it; it is sufficient.
As for embracing, we do not know of a basis for it, but it is known among people when they meet. Otherwise, leaving it is better. Shaking hands, or supplicating for acceptance upon meeting, is sufficient.
