The Permissibility of 'Umrah in Rajab

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:

............?

Answer:
We had previously promised you that we would speak about 'Umrah in Rajab. We have reviewed some of the words of the scholars on this matter, having reviewed some of it before and reviewing some of it again. Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in his book *Al-Lata'if* that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recommend 'Umrah in Rajab. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) performed it. It was also reported from Muhammad ibn Sirin, the great Tabi'i, that he reported from the righteous Salaf that they used to perform 'Umrah in Rajab.
Al-Hafiz al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) also mentioned this in *Al-Sunan*, reporting from Aisha that she used to perform 'Umrah in Rajab. Ibn Sa'd mentioned in his *Tabaqat* a narration ... from Ibn 'Umar that he used to perform 'Umrah in Rajab. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others reported from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed 'Umrah in Rajab. However, the scholars reported from Aisha, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), from Ibn 'Abbas, and from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib what indicates that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform 'Umrah in Rajab, and that Ibn 'Umar made a mistake in this (may Allah be pleased with him and have mercy on him).
What is preserved is that all his 'Umrahs were in Dhul-Qa'dah. This is what is preserved, and this is the correct view: that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform 'Umrah in Rajab, but Ibn 'Umar made a mistake in that. Every person may experience some forgetfulness or lapse of memory. What is preserved is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed 'Umrah in Dhul-Qa'dah: the 'Umrah of Hudaybiyyah, the 'Umrah of Qada' in Dhul-Qa'dah, and the 'Umrah of al-Ji'ranah in Dhul-Qa'dah. As for the 'Umrah that was with his Hajj, he entered the state of ihram for it in Dhul-Qa'dah and performed it in Dhul-Hijjah (peace and blessings be upon him).
By this, it is known that 'Umrah in Rajab is not a religious innovation, but rather a group of the righteous Salaf performed it, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him and grant him satisfaction) performed it. I will look into further research, if Allah wills, and we will point to it in the future, if Allah wills.
