Visiting one's parents for one whose journey is long in the pursuit of knowledge
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If a person travels for the sake of seeking knowledge, and the duration of his travel is long, such as four or five years or more, and his parents demand that he visit them, but he is unable to do so, and it is difficult for him to travel every year to fulfill their request, what should he do?
Answer:
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says in His great Book: [al-Taghābun:16], and He says, Exalted is He: [al-Baqarah:286]. So you must address them in the best manner, by telephone, by phone, or by written letters. This is sufficient. You ask their forgiveness and say, "I am unable to complete [the fast] until I finish." The phone is sufficient, and if you are able to do so by written letter or telegram, that is sufficient, and praise be to Allah. There is no blame on you [al-Taghābun:16].
But it is not befitting for you to go, to travel abroad, to the lands of the disbelievers, as long as you are able to learn in your own land—in an Islamic land—because traveling to the lands of the disbelievers entails great danger, not from the aspect of creed, nor from the aspect of morals. So it is not befitting for the believer to travel abroad for study, or for anything else, except in cases of dire necessity. Rather, he should strive to study in his own land if that is facilitated for him, and be content with that instead of traveling to the lands of the disbelievers.
