The Ruling on Female Students Traveling to Seek Knowledge

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence! This questioner, our sister, we reviewed a question of hers in a previous session. She has this remaining question: Your Eminence! What is the ruling on female students traveling a distance of more than eighty kilometers; and that is for the sake of seeking knowledge, knowing that this is in a bus with approximately fifty students, and that it does not require overnighting, but rather returning on the same day, and likewise regarding the female teachers? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
The ruling in this matter is that it is not permissible for women to travel without a mahram, whether they are students or teachers. This is what is known from the authentic hadiths. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A woman should not travel except with a mahramلا تسافر امرأة إلا مع ذي محرم
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:2565
.
It is obligatory for the students to seek knowledge in their own country, and likewise for the teachers in their own country. As for traveling without a mahram, it is not permissible.
Some scholars have granted a dispensation for this if the road is safe and there is no danger, when there is a need. However, the apparent meaning of the authentic hadiths prohibits it; because he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A woman should not travel except with a mahramلا تسافر امرأة إلا مع ذي محرم
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:2565
and he did not make an exception.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
