The Ruling on Wearing Short Trousers

Question:
Your fatwa has informed us that the thigh is an awrah (part of the body that must be covered); so we wore long trousers that cover the thigh. Some newspapers, magazines, and other parties have called on us to wear short trousers, claiming that it is part of civilization and modernity. We ask for a response to the newspapers that fought against long trousers and called them reactionary.

Answer:
If Allah wills, there is no doubt that the thigh is an awrah (part of the body that must be covered) and it is obligatory to cover it. It has reached us that many people wear short trousers and thin clothing. This is a great danger with regard to prayer, and a danger to the exposure of the awrah (parts of the body that must be covered).
Therefore, it is obligatory to be cautious of this. The trousers should be long, at least down to the knee, so that they cover the thigh. If they are short, it is obligatory that the garment worn over them, the shirt worn over them, be thick enough to cover the awrah (part of the body that must be covered). We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.
