Ruling on abandoning medical treatment in pursuit of reward

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I have a brother in Allah who has been struck by a severe illness, and I said to him: Go to the doctor to take the treatment and be healed, if Allah wills. He said: Praise be to Allah who has made me independent of them. Indeed, Allah has assigned a great reward for this illness, and this matter will suffice me. Is he correct, or is he mistaken?

Answer:
There is no blame on him; abandoning the medicine is permissible. However, the best for him is to seek treatment. He has patience with the illness for the sake of seeking reward, so there is no harm. But the best for him, and what is more appropriate for him, is to take the medicine and be treated; because utilizing the means is a prescribed matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought treatment, and the Companions sought treatment, and they are the best of people. So seeking treatment is better.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
For every disease there is a cure, and if the cure is applied to the disease, it will be cured by the permission of Allah. Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down for it a cure.لكل داء دواء، فإذا أصيب الدواء الداء؛ برء بإذن الله، ما أنزل الله من داء إلا أنزل له شفاء
These are means. Perhaps the patient will be cured and the means will be beneficial, or perhaps he will die because his matter has been completed and his reckoning has ended. But if Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) wills that he be healed, He will provide him with a means. And if death has arrived and the term has ended, the means will not benefit; everything has ended.
