If he is unable to treat his daughter, he may seek zakah for that purpose

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 21048 )
Q: I have a daughter who is suffering from a large tumor that has spread along the spinal cord in her back. I have not found a treatment for it in the specialized hospitals in this field in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia . I have knocked on many doors hoping to find someone to cover the cost of her treatment outside the Kingdom, but to no avail. I even considered borrowing from one of the banks with interest so that I could spend this loan on the treatment of my aforementioned daughter, but I refrained from doing so when I learned that an interest-bearing loan is forbidden. I am a man who possesses nothing of the world’s wealth to spend on the treatment of my daughter, whose illness is worsening day after day. I have been unable to treat her in the hospitals that treat these diseases outside the Kingdom due to my lack of funds. 1- Is it permissible for me to ask the wealthy for a portion of their zakah sufficient to cover her treatment ? 2- If it is not permissible to ask the wealthy for zakah for the treatment of my aforementioned daughter, do I bear a sin for leaving her untreated, knowing that there is a treatment for her outside the Kingdom, but I was unable to take her abroad for treatment due to my lack of funds?
A: If you find someone to lend you the amount needed to treat your daughter without riba (usury or interest), then you should borrow. If you do not find anyone to lend to you and you are poor and unable to
treat her at your own expense, then you may ask for what is sufficient from zakah to treat your daughter. We ask Allah for her healing and for you to be rewarded by Allah. You will not be blamed if you do not treat her, because treatment is not obligatory in the Shari'ah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
