What is the meaning of the hadith (If a mouse falls into the fat of one of you...), and what is the validity of distinguishing between solid and liquid in this regard?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Shaykh, what is mentioned in the books of jurisprudence regarding the issue of solid and liquid, and they mentioned, meaning, the agreement on the liquid?

The Shaykh : Yes, this is, of course, an important hadith and jurisprudential study, because the authentic hadith recorded in "Sahih al-Bukhari" is worded as follows:
If a mouse falls into the fat of one of you, throw it away and what is around it, and then eat your fat. إذا وقعت الفأرة في سمن أحدكم فألقوها وما حولها ، ثم كلوا سمنَكم
. The hadith came in another narration, which was narrated by a man known to the scholars of hadith as trustworthy, except in a specific case which we are not in a position to mention now. It came with a detail and worded as follows:
If a mouse falls into the fat of one of you, if it is liquid, pour it out, and if it is solid, throw away what is around it, and eat your fat. إذا وقعت الفأرة في سمن أحدكم فإن كان مائعًا فأريقوه ، وإن كان جامدًا فألقوا ما حوله ، وكلوا سمنكم
. This detail and this distinction between the fat being solid, in which case one digs out the place of the mouse and throws it away, and then the fat is eaten, and the fat being liquid, in which case it is all thrown away and nothing is gained from it—this detail is not valid from the hadith perspective. Rather, the hadith, as you heard, is absolute:
If a mouse falls into the fat of one of you, throw it away and what is around it, and eat your fat. إذا وقعت الفأرة في سمن أحدكم فألقوها وما حولها ، وكلوا سمنكم
. And this absolute text in narration is the one that should be the only one accepted in knowledge. Why? Because the distinction overlooked something, which is that if it is solid, the mouse, when it falls, cannot dive and then escape; it will take up a certain size. So it is very reasonable to throw away this mouse and what is around it, and then the fat is eaten. Some people did not realize another thing, which is that if the fat is like oil in the heat of summer or like water, the mouse falls and reaches the bottom, then it drowns and dies. So its state will be like this: it has reached the bottom. It decomposes, or else it emits its smell, or else it retains its form, and that is if the owner of the fat noticed its fall immediately, recently, and not much time has passed for this mouse such that what? It decomposes and its corruption spreads to the entirety of this fat. At that time, there is no difference between the fat being solid and the fat being liquid, as long as the mouse still retains its body, has not decomposed, and its limbs have not corrupted. So then, throw it away and what is around it, and the problem is over, and eat your fat. Is there a mosque nearby? So we hear the adhan and we set out.
The student : We heard the adhan.

The Shaykh : So that we can answer the mu'adhdhin.
The student : The adhan, my Shaykh, the adhan.

The Shaykh : The adhan?
The student : Yes, and we waited ten minutes.

The Shaykh : ...
The student : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : No, there is no time or...
The student : ... a quick issue.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.
