The questioner : May Allah reward you. The questioner says: The honorable Shaykh, we request clarification of the scholars' opinions on completing or not completing the voluntary prayer when the iqamah is called.

The Shaykh : What I know are three opinions. The first opinion is that the voluntary prayer becomes invalid as soon as the iqamah is called, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When the Iqamah has been called for the Salat then there is no Salat except the obligatory. إذا أقيمت الصلاة فلا صلاة إلا المكتوبة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 421Sahih (Darussalam)
.
The second opinion is the opposite: that it does not become invalid, and one should complete it unless he fears that the imam will say the taslim before he finishes it, in which case he should cut it off.
The third opinion is the middle one, which is that if the iqamah is called and the person is in the second rak'ah of the voluntary prayer, he should complete it briefly. If he is in the first rak'ah, he should cut it off. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer. من أدرك ركعة من الصلاة فقد أدرك الصلاة
Muwatta Malik 1:15
. The aspect of the evidence is that the one who stood up for the second rak'ah caught a rak'ah of the prayer in a state where he is excused, because it was before the iqamah, so he has caught it and should complete it briefly.
As for if he is in the first rak'ah, let him cut it off, based on the implication of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer. من أدرك ركعة من الصلاة فقد أدرك الصلاة
Muwatta Malik 1:15
. This opinion is the middle one and it is the correct one: that if the iqamah is called after he has stood up for the second rak'ah, let him complete it briefly, and if he is in the first rak'ah, even if he is in the second prostration of the first rak'ah, he should cut it off.
