Question:
I would like the Shaykh (may Allah preserve him) to explain to me the hadith: "Indeed, a man may do the deeds of the people of Paradise in what appears to people, yet he is among the people of the Fire"?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. This is the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the truthful and veracious one, said: "Indeed, one of you is gathered in the womb of his mother for forty days as a drop of fluid, then he becomes a clot for the same duration, then he becomes a lump of flesh for the same duration. Then the angel is sent to him to breathe into him the soul, and he is commanded with four words: to write his provision, his lifespan, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or happy. Then he said (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Indeed, one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is nothing between him and it but a cubit, when the decree overtakes him, and he does the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it. And indeed, one of you may do the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is nothing between him and it but a cubit, when the decree overtakes him, and he does the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it.' This indicates that deeds are judged by their endings. If a person is concluded with good, he enters Paradise, even if he was sinful in the past of his life. If he repents to Allah before his death, before the death rattle, then Allah accepts his repentance and he enters Paradise. And if he is upon bad deeds and is concluded with evil, concluded with a bad ending, deviating from the religion, and how many there are who deviate because of trials, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah. If he is concluded with deviation from the religion, therefore it is obligatory for the Muslim always and forever to ask Allah for a good ending. And Allah the Exalted said: (O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims)."
