The questioner : Regarding the takhrij of Imam al-Bayhaqi for the hadiths of al-Umm.

The Shaykh : The hadiths.

The questioner : The mother.

The Shaykh : The mother.

The questioner : His takhrij, what is your opinion of his takhrij?

The Shaykh : His takhrij is according to the hadith methodology, meaning with the chains of narration. His hadiths are divided into two categories. The first category, which is very few in number, is followed by his statement: "Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated it," or "Al-Bukhari narrated it," or "Muslim narrated it." This is the first category, and it is very few. The second category: he presents the hadiths according to the hadith standard with the chain, and rarely does he clarify by saying, "Its chain is authentic" or "weak." The rest, which is the majority, requires the efforts of the researchers among the hadith scholars to say, "This chain is authentic, or good, or weak." Then, if it is weak, or if it is good, by tracking the supporting chains and corroborating narrations to rescue the weak from its weakness, raising it to the level of "good for other reasons" or "authentic for other reasons." And what is good in itself is also raised to the level of "authentic for other reasons" by the same method. This is an effort that requires many years from a well-established scholar just to authenticate al-Bayhaqi's Sunan al-Kubra and give each hadith its rank and grade. And according to this method I am mentioning, of tracking the corroborating narrations and supporting chains... I think you have seen the book "Irwaa' al-Ghalil." This is a takhrij of a fiqh book, in which there are about two thousand hadiths... This alone took years. So what do you think if one were to turn to al-Bayhaqi's Sunan al-Kubra, which served the fiqh of Imam al-Shafi'i in "al-Umm"? It requires a tremendous amount of work. You have Imam Ahmad's Musnad, which Ahmad Shakir began authenticating. Sixteen volumes were printed, and those sixteen volumes represent a quarter of the book. So if a person wanted to authenticate the entire Musnad in this way, it would take his whole life.
