Is it permissible to invest in global stock exchanges?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to invest in global stock exchanges, and how is zakah calculated in service institutions, such as certain companies?

Answer:
If global stock exchanges deal in gambling or maysir, or in riba, it is not permissible to deal with them or participate in them. However, if they deal in something permissible and something good, there is no harm in dealing with them. This depends on the nature of the stock exchange's dealings. If its dealings are haram, then the earnings from it are haram, and it is not permissible to participate in it. If it deals in a permissible manner that contains nothing haram, then dealing with it is permissible. As for service institutions, zakah is due on their net earnings. That is, institutions that serve the community or serve people for a fee; their zakah is due on their net earnings.
